The Northern Regional Police Department would like to make you aware of a ruse thieves are using to gain access to your homes. Our Department, as well as other police departments county wide have been taking reports of thieves posing as utility workers attempting to gain access to your basement area. Once you escort them to the basement, a second thief will enter the same door and steal valuables. They may also attempt to lure you to the rear of your property leaving the front door exposed . As a general rule, utility workers should not be randomly coming to your residence to do interior work without a scheduled appointment. Utility workers should have proper identification as well as a company vehicle parked in close proximity. Any legitimate utility worker would not have any issue with you calling 911 and having a police officer verify their credentials. Please call 911 immediately if you are presented with this circumstance.
